The scientific name of the plant is Citrus bergamia, whose fruit is similar in size to an orange medium size, roundish shape, slightly pear-shaped, with yellow skin smooth and thin and sour pulp.

In Italy, the bergamot are cultivated since the eighteenth century in the province of Reggio Calabria, the Ionian side, where there is a microclimate perfect for this type of plant, in other places of the world produces 350 chemical components that distinguish it, thanks to the principles assets included in its essence (or essential oil): this, that is the noble part of bergamot, is derived from the skin, and is used worldwide for the production of the best perfumes and cosmetics. It ‘a product exported to Europe, USA, United Arab Emirates, but also in India, China and Japan.

In recent years the bergamot is finding uses in medicine, following the discovery of its important properties: it is in fact (after elimination of components called bergapteni creating photosensitivity) an antibacterial that fights in an extraordinary way the Gram-positive, and antifungal antiviral. According to recent studies at the University of Cosenza and other universities in the world, the bergamot juice inhibits the production of cholesterol in the blood.

the famous Earl Grey

A Citrus, Bergamot, always exploited by multinational fragrance, now in great demand and especially consumed as juice but also in the form of candied peel, flavoring tea (the famous Earl Grey) or liqueurs and brandies.

Currently acreage bergamot in Reggio Calabria is around 2,500 hectares, it does not delete anything bergamot, production data concerning the essential oil on an annual basis ranges from 100,000 to 180,000 kilograms. Note that to get one pound of essence are necessary as many as 200 kilos of fruit.
