Bergasterol bergamot juice reduces cholesterol

The use of bergamot juice for cholesterol has gained attention after two studies have shown that lowers levels of total cholesterol, together with low-density lipoproteins (LDL). LDL, often called bad cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease. It may cause fat to accumulate in the arteries and reduce the flow of blood carrying oxygen to the heart and brain. The research also showed bergamot for cholesterol raised the level of high density lipoprotein (HDL), which is considered the good cholesterol with protective benefits.

Triglyceride levels decreased among study participants with bergamot for cholesterol. Triglycerides represent the amount of fat stored in the human body for use as energy. In both studies, the researchers found a significant decrease in triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol levels. The dosages ranged between 500 milligrams per day to 1,000 milligrams per day. All patients used in the research had total cholesterol levels above 250 before taking bergamot.

A study published in 2009 conducted by Italian scientists has shown bergamot for total cholesterol levels cholesterol drops by about 31 percent after one month. LDL levels decreased by approximately 39 percent, and triglycerides decreased by 41.5 percent. The report also states HDL levels increased by about 43 percent in participants who took bergamot once or twice a day for four weeks. Another effect discovered by researchers occurred in the levels of glucose in the blood, which have fallen by an average of 22 percent.

Substances present in the fruit were compared to commercial drugs in their ability to lower cholesterol.
